LASER SKIN & WRINKLE RESURFACING

The Palomar Laser represents a major innovation in the treatment of common skin care challenges such as sunspots, fine lines around the eyes, and acne scars. We are proud to offer this newly approved treatment so our patients can enjoy impressive results with little or no downtime*. Read more about Palomar Laser (fractional laser) below, or contact our Greensburg medical center to make an appointment.

How does Palomar Laser (fractional laser) work?

The Palomar Laser delivers energy to the deep layers of the skin to smooth away wrinkles, fill in acne scars, and eliminate skin discoloration. Palomar Laser Treatment (FLT) is a “fractional” treatment; that is, the Palomar Laser produces scores of deep columns of treatment in the skin. These are called microthermal treatment zones. These narrow columns make it possible for the Palomar Laser to treat precise areas of tissue without affecting any surrounding tissue. This pattern of treatment also reduces healing time and minimizes swelling and temporary redness.

The Palomar Laser works by stimulating the skin’s natural healing process. Following treatment, your body will create new tissue and collagen to replace damaged cells.

What can the Palomar Laser treat?

The Palomar Laser has been cleared by the FDA to treat acne scars, skin discoloration such as sun spots and melasma (hormone-related hyperpigmentation), and fine lines around the eyes.

What are Palomar Laser treatments like?

Palomar laser treatments are quick with minimal downtime and mild discomfort.

Your skin will be cleansed in preparation for treatment.

Patients usually describe the sensation of the Palomar Laser as a prickling sensation. The topical anesthetic helps prevent discomfort.

Immediately after treatment, you will soon be free to put on makeup and return to your daily life.

On average, patients undergo three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart. Please speak with our physicians to learn about the course of treatment that is best for you.

Are there any risks associated with the Palomar Laser?

The Palomar Laser combines the effectiveness of an ablative skin resurfacing treatment with the gentleness of a non-ablative method. Palomar Laser treatments are safe, comfortable, and result in little or no down time. Swelling is minimal or nonexistent and disappears within 24 hours after treatment. You may experience skin redness, and it is normal and expected for skin to bronze and flake. It is fine to wear makeup to mask temporary redness and to use moisturizer to minimize skin flaking.

What sort of results can I expect from Palomar Laser treatments?

Patients typically see improvement in their skin condition after just one session of Palomar Laser treatments. Because the Palomar Laser stimulates your body’s healing mechanisms and the production of new collagen, results are progressive, with the final result appearing in three to six months after your initial treatment*. At this point, you can expect to see improved skin texture, smaller pores, a smoothing away of wrinkles or acne scars, and overall rejuvenation of the treated area.

LASER HAIR REDUCTION

Human hair grows nearly everywhere on the body except few areas like feet soles. The hair can be fine and almost invisible, or very coarse and dark. Depending on personal preference and social norms, women and men opt to remove hair from certain body areas as a part of their beauty routine.

Why do we have unwanted hair?

Androgenetic hormones are the main regulators of hair follicles and control where hair will and will not grow, as well as its thickness and color. Men have much higher androgen levels than women, which makes them have more, as well as thicker, body hair. A person’s hairiness (hair distribution) is primarily determined by genetics, but it can also be affected by medications, such as steroids, or by hormonal imbalances. There are many hair removal systems and hair removal methods for removing unwanted hair, most commonly from the legs, bikini line, armpits, back, upper lip and chin.

Who will want hair removal?

Hair removal is a personal preference, but significantly influenced by social norms. Some people feel that hair is natural and welcome all hair growth, while others seek treatment for hair reduction or even permanent hair removal. Since genetics play a major role, some ethnic groups tend to have more hair on their bodies. On an individual level, there are many men and women with higher androgen levels who have more hair.

Who is a good candidate?

Patients with areas of unwanted hair that is dark in color and coarse are the best candidate. Also having very light colored non-tanned skin makes the treatments easier and safer.

Common areas we treat in our office:

Chin              Upper lip          Underarms             Bikini area              Back

What does the procedure involve?

  • Hair must only be shaved not waxed or plucked
  • Small areas can take as little as 10 minutes and larger areas take 30-60 minutes
  • The patient feels warmth, sees flashing lights while wearing eye protection and feels a snapping rubber band sensation against the skin
  • After the treatment the area may be pink, might feel stinging for several minutes and the hair follicle with look like a small bump for a short period of time
  • A gel is placed on the skin immediately prior to treatment

How many treatments does it involve?

Because hair grows in cycles multiple treatments are needed for any given location. A good estimate is: 3-5 treatments for a 75 to 85% reduction.

Maintenance treatments are needed once a year.

LASER VEIN TREATMENT

Lasers are used to treat multiple vascular imperfections, including small facial veins and angioimas, as well as Rosacea and birthmarks. The IPL/BBL laser is used to target the vascular lesion/area. It is performed in a series of several treatments once every 4-5 weeks to reach the desired level of correction. Patients experience minimal discomfort during treatment. Short term side effects may include redness, stinging, swelling and possibly bruising.

IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION

IPL – INTENSE PULSED LIGHT PHOTOREJUVENATION has been used successfully for many years to treat sun damaged skin, as well as visible facial veins and vascular marks. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™) technology is a breakthrough treatment that can correct a variety of benign skin conditions, such as facial skin imperfections, the signs of photo-aging, birthmarks, unsightly small veins, and other blemishes. It offers a safe, non-invasive solution that can be tailored to your individual condition and skin type. Photorejuvenation provides superior cosmetic results and outstanding satisfaction.

The IPL filters light from different parts of the spectrum with each band of light having a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sunspot removal and vessel clearance. Multiple treatments may be necessary to reach the desired result and side effects may include mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor redness or swelling. A series of treatments is recommended for our Pittsburgh photorejuvenation patients to achieve the best possible results.

What Conditions can Photorejuvenation Treat?

  1. Sun Damage and Photo-aging
Facial imperfections or abnormalities can detract from your well-being and appearance, no matter how healthy and young you feel. Photorejuvenation technology helps create smoother-looking skin. After a series of treatments, you can see a significant reduction of unwanted pigmentation. Photorejuvenation can be used effectively on the neck, chest, arms, and hands – all of the areas that are aged by the sun.
  2. Broken Veins and Capillaries (Benign Vascular Lesions)
The face has an extensive network of veins and tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Over time, aging, trauma, sun exposure, and certain lifestyle factors cause a number of them to break, appearing as red streaks or blotches on the face. IPL™ photorejuvenation can eliminate damaged veins and capillaries by removing all traces of these unsightly blemishes.
  3. Redness Caused by Broken Capillaries
Many people suffer from broken capillaries and diffuse erythema (facial redness), experiencing social embarrassment as a result. For both women and men, IPL photorejuvenation can successfully treat dilated blood vessels without injuring the surrounding healthy skin.
