Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is an excellent option for people who feel that their chin is misshapen or unbalanced in relation to the rest of their face. A chin implant can enhance your appearance and may bolster your self-esteem. Frequently, these implants help provide a more harmonious balance to your face when performed simultaneously with nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) or with dermal fillers that are applied to the cheek area.

What is chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation is the surgical placement of a chin implant to accentuate a chin that is less pronounced. It is placed to give a more balanced look to your face. The implant adds definition to the jaw and balances the appearance of the nose.

Who is a good candidate for chin augmentation?

Any healthy male or female who has concerns about a recessed chin, a pointy or square chin, a prominent nose, and/or a “fleshy” neck can have this surgery. This procedure does not alter your bite, only the facial contour.

Also, if you have used dermal fillers such as Juvederm to try and create a stronger jaw line, and liked the result, you may be an especially good candidate for a chin implant, which will provide a longer lasting result.

Are there any risks involved?

As with any surgery infection is a very rare complication, but can be treated with medications should it occur. It’s also possible for an implant to shift slightly out of alignment, which may require a second, corrective procedure. Numbness of the lip is also possible but very rare.

How do I plan for chin augmentation surgery?

When you discuss this procedure with Dr. Lazzaro, you need to be clear about your expectations so that he can help you determine a realistic result. If you are on medication – either over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription – be sure to ask if you should continue taking the medicine or stop before surgery. If you take any herbal supplements, ask about those, too.

What happens during chin augmentation surgery?

The chin augmentation procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and usually takes about one hour to complete while under a MAC/sedation or general anesthetic. During the procedure, Dr. Lazzaro will try different size implants to determine which size looks best.

The implant itself is typically made of solid silicone and is shaped like the narrow chin guard of a sports helmet. The surgeon may further sculpt the implant to adjust the shape for a custom fit. Once in place, the chin implant should create a strong, natural-looking jaw line. The implant is then placed in a pocket created in front of your chin. The incision is placed on the underside of your chin where it is not obvious. Incisions inside of the mouth are an option. Chin augmentation is also performed with rhinoplasty surgery to create a balanced, harmonized look.

What happens after chin augmentation surgery?

Since we perform chin augmentation surgery as an outpatient procedure, you will be free to return home the same day of the surgery. You will have a bandage tightly secured under your chin to help restrict movement.  You may experience some discomfort and swelling in the area for several days. Bruising is usually minimal and disappears quickly.

How long is the recovery after chin augmentation?*

You will be able to return to normal activities within a short time and should be able to return to work within a few days. While you may experience some temporary tightness, your chin and neck area may show bruising, both should disappear within a week. The final results may not be visible for several weeks.
