Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works by beaming light into the hair follicle. The pigment in the follicle absorbs this light and converts it to heat, which permanently alters the hair follicle so no hair grows back. What is laser skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing can correct a wide range of skin problems. The laser vaporizes water in skin cells, and these cells are then wiped away. In about six weeks, new tighter, softer skin emerges.

What makes laser skin resurfacing different from microdermabrasion or chemical peels is that it allows the surgeon to have more control. The laser is aimed with pinpoint accuracy and the laser pulse can be adjusted for specific depths, enough to remove only the problem area. Other advantages include little (if any) bleeding and less post-operative discomfort.

Who is a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing?

Men and women of all ages can benefit from laser resurfacing, but the most ideal candidates are people with fair, healthy, non-oily skin. Patients with other skin characteristics may find other types of treatments more beneficial.

Recent users of Accutane® (within 12 to 18 months), people who are scar prone, or people with skin infections on the target area may not be the most appropriate candidates.

One thing to keep in mind: even though laser skin resurfacing is guaranteed to give your skin a smoother appearance, lines that develop from the natural movements of the face will return. These lines, however, can be battled with BOTOX® injections.

Are any risks involved with laser skin resurfacing?

One of the major benefits of laser resurfacing is that complications are rare and minor. Nevertheless, complications do sometimes arise and may result in blisters, scarring, discolorations, or cold sores.

How do I prepare for laser skin resurfacing?

In your initial consultations, you should be frank about your expectations and ask any questions as procedures are explained and as you share your own medical history.

Though most cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance companies, Aestique® Medical Center participates with most insurance carriers. Our staff will assist you in this area.

What happens during the laser skin resurfacing procedure?

During laser skin resurfacing treatment, the laser is carefully passed back and forth over the skin until the wrinkles, or scars, become less visible.

The specific procedures for laser resurfacing depend upon your needs, and usually last from a few minutes up to a couple hours. A pre-treatment skin care plan will be explained to you. This varies for each person, so the details will be given at the consultation.

For most resurfacing procedures, a local anesthetic or mild sedation (twilight sleep) can be used, depending on the area that will be treated. Twilight sleep allows the patient to be conscious, but to feel no pain and have no memory of the procedure.

What happens after the laser skin resurfacing procedure?

Usually an opaque, medicated dressing is applied to the treated area and then changed several times within the first 48 hours following treatment. After the medical dressing is removed, ointments and creams are applied to the treatment area until the healing is complete.

Mild swelling and discomfort can develop after laser skin resurfacing, which can be easily relieved by ice packs and prescribed medicines. Any crusts that may appear usually disappear within 10 days. To prevent scarring, you should not pick at the scabs or crusts.

How long is the recovery period after laser skin resurfacing?

Generally, a few weeks are necessary for your new skin to turn from pink or red to a more natural color. You should be aware that the skin may be unusually sensitive, and you may need to use different cosmetics than usual. Some pinkness may last for as long as six months, but is easily camouflaged with make-up as early as 10 days to two weeks after laser skin resurfacing.

Most importantly, you should protect your new skin from harmful ultraviolet rays by wearing a hat or visor and by using a sun block cream with an SBF of at least 15. If your treatment was around the eyes, you should wear quality sunglasses with UVA and UVB 100 percent filters.

Once the final results appear, you will have a new quality of skin with a fresher, smoother appearance. Alternatives to Laser Skin Resurfacing

For those individuals who cannot manage a few weeks of recovery that is necessary for laser skin resurfacing, a new and exciting option is the non-invasive laser wrinkle removal (CoolTouch®). Although it takes longer to achieve the final results, it eliminates downtime completely.
