Facelift Surgery – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Many men and women have achieved a fresher, more youthful appearance through facelift. At our facility located outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we perform the surgery by tightening your skin, connective tissue and underlying muscle for a younger, more refreshed appearance. Another key benefit of a facelift is that it may boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.

What is a facelift?

Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, counters the effects of aging, gravity, stress, and sun exposure through surgical techniques that smooth facial creases, tighten sagging skin, and remove excess fat. A facelift can give you a more youthful, alert look.

Who is a good candidate for facelift surgery?

Patients come to Aestique® Medical Center for facelift surgery from all over the Greater Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania. Adults from their 40s to 60s with strong, well-defined bone structure and elastic, but sagging, skin make ideal candidates for facelift surgery. Even people into their 70s and 80s have benefited from this procedure.

Are there any risks involved?

With the professional care offered at Aestique® Medical Center, complications during or after facelift surgery are rare and, if they do occur, are usually minor. It is possible that blood may collect under the skin, forming a hematoma, which must be removed by a surgeon. It’s also possible for facelift surgery to leave nerves damaged, usually temporarily. Patients can also experience infection and allergic reactions to anesthesia.

How do I plan for a facelift?

When meeting at Aestique® for your initial consultation, you should make certain that you share with Dr. Lazzaro and Dr. Antimarino your expectations for the surgery. You should also tell us about any medical conditions, especially if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or a tendency to scar excessively. You should also mention whether or not you are a smoker and if you take any medications.

During your consultation your surgeon will perform an evaluation of your skin and face, including your bone structure. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about the procedure, costs, and insurance. We are here to make you comfortable by giving you the best information and care during every step of the process.

You will be fully informed about surgery preparations, including the details of eating, drinking, smoking, and the taking or avoidance of certain vitamins and medicines. Smokers should refrain from smoking for a week or two before and after the procedure to assist healing.

What happens during facelift surgery?

For most facelift procedures, a general anesthetic will be used. The exact surgical process depends on your needs and anatomy. In a traditional facelift, the incision begins above the hairline near the temples and follows your contours in a line to the front of the ear, continuing behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. Most often a short incision technique that does not cross into the hairline is used.

Next, the skin is separated from the fat and muscle, and the underlying structures are strategically tightened. The skin is gently pulled back, eliminating sagging, and is then stitched back into place. Absorbable sutures are frequently used for facelift procedures.

After the facelift procedure, a small, tube may be temporarily placed under the skin behind your ear for drainage. Your head will be wrapped in bandages to minimize bruising and swelling for the first 24 hours.

What happens after facelift surgery?

One of the benefits of a facelift is that, after your return home, you should not expect to experience any significant discomfort. A slight numbness of the skin is to be expected, which disappears after a few weeks or months. Lymphatic drainage massages are provided post-operatively, which enable you to return to your usual routine within two weeks.

Sutures are usually removed five days following surgery. Make-up may be applied within 10 days of surgery. If desired, our esthetician will assist you in determining the products that are best suited for your skin type.

How long is the recovery after facelift surgery?

Dr. Lazzaro and Dr. Antimarino recommend that patients take it easy for the first week after facelift surgery, even though you can be up and about the next day. You should also avoid sex, housework, and other strenuous activities for two weeks. For several weeks, it is also recommended that you avoid alcohol, steam baths, and saunas, as well as the sun. Rest is the best way to help your body heal.

Do not be discouraged if you feel disappointed with the results that you see in the first couple of weeks. It is normal for facelift patients to look a bit pale, swollen, and bruised after surgery, but when these aftereffects clear, you will have a younger looking appearance. Within a couple of weeks after surgery, you may return to your usual work routine.

Can I combine facelift surgery with other procedures?

It’s common for facelift surgery to be combined with other procedures such as rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, BOTOX® Cosmetic, Restylane®, chemical peel, microdermabrasion, or IPL™ photorejuvenation. Combining two or more procedures can give you a stunning cosmetic makeover and can let you address more than one troublesome feature in one session.
