Breast Enhancement - Breast Augmentation with Implants at Aestique® Medical Center in Greensburg near Pittsburgh

Many women have benefited from the new look that breast augmentation has given them. We perform breast augmentation, also known breast enhancement, through the use of implants at our center in Greensburg, outside of Pittsburgh center to increase the size of breasts and balance differently sized breasts. Breast enhancement can give women a boost in self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as improve quality of life.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation (enhancement) is an out-patient procedure offered at Aestique® Medical Center that can increase your bust line by one or more sizes. By surgically inserting breast implants beneath the breast tissue or the chest muscle during breast augmentation, women can achieve larger, shapelier breasts. This type of breast enhancement is sometimes performed in conjunction with a breast lift.

Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery?

Any physically fit woman with realistic expectations about the results that can be achieved through breast enhancement makes a good candidate for the procedure. The most important consideration is how you want to feel and look.

Are any risks involved with breast implants?

At Aestique® Medical Center, we offer competent, meticulous care so that women do not experience any complications following breast enhancement. However, Dr. Lazzaro and Dr. Antimarino want you to be fully informed of the possible risks associated with breast implants.

One risk of breast augmentation is capsular contracture — a tightening of the scar tissue — which can make the breast feel hard. Further treatment to resolve this problem can involve removal of the scar tissue, or replacement of the breast implant.

Sometimes, breast implants break or leak. If the implant is saline-filled, it deflates and the solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body. If the implant is filled with silicone gel, the gel may travel into the surrounding tissue, altering the shape of the breast, and will need to be removed with further surgery.

Other risks of breast augmentation include bleeding and infection, which may result in the removal of the implant until the infection clears. In a few rare cases, some women have reported symptoms similar to diseases of the immune system and arthritis. They reported joint pain, swelling, fever, fatigue, and breast pain. Though no clear link has been found between silicone breast implants and connective-tissue disorders, the FDA has requested further study.

A note on breast implants: In November 2006, silicone implants were placed back on the market and the FDA cleared them for use. It is your choice to have either saline or silicone breast implants and this can be discussed further at your consultation.

How do I plan for breast augmentation surgery?

During your initial breast augmentation (enhancement) consultation at our center in Greensburg, outside Pittsburgh, you should be frank about your expectations so that your surgeon can discern the best way to meet your cosmetic goals. In order to ensure the best treatment possible, you should also inform Dr. Lazzaro or Dr. Antimarino about your general health, smoking habits, and any vitamins or medications you take. At that time, Dr. Lazzaro and Dr. Antimarino will fully discuss your breast implant options, explain anesthesia, and discuss the costs of breast augmentation surgery at Aestique® Medical Center.

Dr. Lazzaro and Dr. Antimarino will inform you about surgery preparations, including the details of eating, drinking, smoking, and the taking or avoiding of certain vitamins and medicines.

What happens during breast enhancement surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery usually takes one to two hours, and is performed under general anesthesia. The surgical method used for breast enhancement depends on your unique needs and cosmetic goals. Usually, incisions are made in the axilla (armpit area). Through the incision, a pocket is created by lifting the skin, breast tissue and muscle to insert the implant and center it beneath the nipple. A benefit of having the implant placed beneath the chest muscles, instead of the breast tissue alone, is that the chances of capsular contracture are reduced, and the breast implant is less likely to interfere with mammograms. Internal absorbable sutures are used to close the incisions, which eliminates the need for stitch removal. Drainage tubes are not utilized, which decreases discomfort.

What happens after the breast augmentation procedure?

Tiredness and soreness following breast augmentation surgery are common, but not debilitating. Pain medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort. After breast enhancement surgery you may feel a burning sensation in your nipples, but this will fade after about two weeks, when the bruising fades. We will request that you remain in a support bra with no underwires for approximately four to six weeks. Breast swelling may take up to five weeks to subside.

How long is recovery after breast enhancement surgery?

Dr. Lazzaro and Dr. Antimarino will give you specific guidelines to follow during your recovery based on your personal needs. In general, you can expect to return to your usual routine after a few days, but you should avoid direct contact with your breasts for a few weeks, because of the heightened sensitivity. Any changes in breast sensitivity will disappear over time.

Scars usually stay firm and pink for at least six weeks and will begin to fade after several months. However, they will not disappear completely. For some women who have recently given birth, extra milk may be produced, which may cause some discomfort.

Following breast augmentation surgery, routine mammograms should continue. Breast enhancement patients need to be sure to visit a center that can reliably x-ray breasts that have been augmented with implants.
