Hair Transplant

Serving Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Johnstown Hair Transplant Patients

Nearly 40 percent of males and 20 percent of females suffer from hair loss in the U.S. Despite the fact that hair loss remains a socially accepted condition among the male population, it is still a source of anxiety and can affect a man’s self-esteem. Unfortunately, females don’t benefit from the same social acceptance, making hair loss a major source of stress.

After extensive research on the topic, Pittsburgh plastic surgery provider Julio Clavijo had the opportunity to visit and “shadow” Dr. Alfonso Barrera, an internationally recognized hair transplant surgeon. During his time with Dr. Barerra, Dr. Clavijo was able to learn the most novel advances in hair transplantation. We have fashioned our technique protocols after Dr. Barrera’s to ensure the highest standards of care and best outcomes. We did this in order to bring the latest advances and hair transplantation techniques to the patients of Aestique.

A person may begin to lose his or her hair for various reasons. Whether it is a hormonal sensitivity or a trauma, Dr. Clavijo’s hair transplantation protocol can improve the hairline. The key is prevention. Do not wait until you are bald before seeking treatment. The earlier you begin, the easier it will be to achieve the density and coverage you are looking for.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

  • Females or males with hair loss or thinning hair
  • Patients with adequate donor sites
  • Patients who want to improve their hairline

What Is Involved in the Actual Treatment?

When a patient comes in for a hair transplant, he or she is sedated and a local anesthetic is injected into the back of the scalp where the doctor will harvest a donor site (a strip of skin where hair growth is still prominent). This donor site is divided into hundreds of individual follicles, which are then inserted one by one into the designated treatment area. Depending on the severity of hair loss, 2-3 sessions may be required.

Immediately Following Treatment

Generally, there is minimal pain associated with this procedure. The patient will have a bulky head dressing around the treatment area for up to three days. These dressings must be kept dry until the patient returns to the office. Restrictions include no heavy lifting and no activities that increase the heart rate for up to two weeks. Patients are asked to wear a hat indoors for two weeks, and up to four weeks outdoors. Dr. Clavijo also has a specific protocol of prescription products for hair care after treatment. This can include Progaine shampoo and Rogaine topical treatments.

Care after Your Treatment

Typically, 95 percent of grafts take, but sometimes it may take up to two to three sessions to get the desired density and coverage you are looking for. The results of treatment depend on the patient’s natural hair growth cycle; the growth cycle begins the first month and the hair then enters a rest phase at two to four months. At four to six months, the new growth begins. At the one-year mark, the patient may schedule the next phase of the transplant.
